Lithuania

The southernmost of the three Baltic Republics, Lithuania borders onto Poland, Latvia, Belarus and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. Lithuania joined the European Union along with the other Baltic Republics in 2004. The economy has seen strong growth following the privatisation of most industries. The east of the country is mostly with many small lakes.

Driving on the right hand side of the road may be a new experience for some visitors as may well be the use of kilometres to measure distance - one good thing about using a rental car is that it will be adapted to local conditions with the steering on the left hand side and the speedometer marked in kilometres per hour.

The availability of rentals cars is very good throughout in Vilnius and Klaipeda.

The speed limits in Lithuania are:

On Motorways the limit is 130 kilometres per hour in summer (Apr-Oct) and 100 kilometres per hour in winter (Oct -Apr). This equates to about 80 miles per hour or 62 miles per hopur. On other roads not showing any other restriction the limit is 90 kilometres per hour, that's 56 miles per hour. In towns the limit is 50 kilometres per hour, or 31 miles per hour.

Drivers face severe penalties if found driving with more than 40mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Persons under the age of 18 years are not allowed to drive in Lithuania even though they may hold a driving licence issued in another country.

The wearing of seat belts is compulsory and children must be 10 years old or over to occupy a front passenger seat, unless in a child safety seat.

Before you drive away check that your hire car has a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit and a warning triangle as these must be carried in Lithuania.
