Coventry town guide
Coventry is a modern and busy city in the heart of England, a centre for industry at the crossroads of the country. The city has a proud history stretching back around a thousand years to the time of the Saxons, just prior to the Norman conquest.
Most people who know Coventry will remember the story of Lady Godiva, she is remembered of course, for her naked ride through the town on horseback, allegedly in an attempt to persuade her husband to lower the crippling taxes that the poor citizens suffered. Unfortunately for the story, Coventry then, was little more than a hamlet and such a ride would have been very short indeed. The story has always had its place in legend associated with the city. No doubt people will recount the tale for as long as Coventry exists.
Coventry rapidly became a centre of the engineering industry following the industrial revolution. Many proud names in the British Motoring industry have been associated with Coventry. The Standard Motor company built many fine motor vehicles in the city until it was absorbed into one the larger motor groups.
For motoring enthusiasts, the name Coventry Climax became synonymous with high performance cars from the 1950s on wards, not bad for a design that started life as a Fire Pump motor!
No visitor to Coventry could fail to be moved by the story of Coventry's cathedrals, the destruction wrought during the Blitz in the second world war gave rise to a splendid creation in the 1960's that now stands as a monument to the determination of the people of Coventry in their darkest hour.
With a hire car the visitor will have easy access to the delights of Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, with its Castle or Royal Lemington Spa, not forgetting the National Exhibition Centre near to Birmingham International Airport.
