Kingston town guide
The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is situated in South West London, it is one of only four Royal Boroughs in England and Wales. The town's close relationship with successive monarchs began over a thousand years ago with the coronation of seven Anglo Saxon Kings on the Coronation Stone.
Kinston Upon Thames is now one of the most prosperous parts of London and the South East of England. Much of the present day employment is in the service sector with a preponderance of part time work. In the early part of the twentieth century Kingston upon Thames was the home of the Sopwith Aircraft Company, builders of the famous Sopwith Camel, made famous by the exploits of allied pilots in the First World War.
Kingston has developed into one of the finest shopping centres in the area surrounding London, with Bentall's department store being noted within the area.
Although well provided with public transport a hire car will allow the visitor to venture further, possibly as far as the south coast within a day. Closer to Kingston upon Thames the visitor can find many attractions, including the great parks at Richmond, Roehampton and Windsor. Also close by is Hampton Court, the palace of Henry Vlll and famous for its maze.
