Coleraine town guide
Coleraine, near Londonderry, is an outstandingly beautiful area with some of the most spectacular countryside in Northern Ireland.
It is an ideal holiday base for all the family, with spectacular blue-flag beaches. One of these, Portstewart Strand gives excellent views over the Donegal Hills.
From the town ramparts, walk down to the River Bann and you will find many riverside walks including Christie Park and Somerset Riverside Park. In Anderson Park is the Phoenix Peace Fountain, dedicated in July 2002, as a reminder to the people of Northern Ireland of America's lasting support for the Northern Ireland Peace Process.
At the nearby popular seaside resort of Portrush is the Royal Portrush Golf Club, with magnificent views and breathtaking scenery. Further along the coast towards the Giant's Causeway is the Bushmill's Distillery. Here you can have a tour to see how this famous whiskey is made and have a sample afterwards.
A spectacular landmark, owned by the National Trust, is the famous Giant's Causeway, giving views of Donegal and as far as the Scottish coastline across the sea. Legend has it that this amazing geological phenomenon was the work of Finn McGool, a giant who is said to have inhabited a draughty Antrim crag. This is easily reached with a rental car from Coleraine.
